JOURNALISM IS NOT A PROFESSION. DISCUSS.

Name: Damnang Dorothy Tindam

Journalism is the occupation of writing, editing, photographing, broadcasting news, or of conducting any news organization as a business. The word "journalism” is derived from the word "Journal" which means a daily register or a dairy-a book containing each day’s business or transaction.

Journalism was founded by an Indian man who goes by the name James Augustus Hicky in addition to the Calcutta General Advertiser in 1780.

To begin with, Alberto Cairo said and I quote "if you learn what I teach you really well, nothing will happen to you if the news world goes under water at some point”, going forward he told his students, "Even if all the newspapers disappear, they still have a job”and on this note, I base my point that journalism is not a profession. Journalism has in no doubt arguably being discussed as to whether it is a profession, a job or even  an occupation over the past years.

Secondly, seeing journalism in a broad day light will let one realize that, journalism is more of a skill learnt on a field to impact on the citizens. Alberto Cairo "The way I understand journalism I’m a much broader sense, journalism is not a profession, it more of an activity. And it’s a frame of mind".

Furthermore more, numerous articles have been undoubtedly released over the past years debating on the professionalism of journalism. With the profession comes with a  strong element of social responsibility. And for that reason, journalists are required to follow the highest ethical standards-accuracy, balance, impartiality, truthfulness and independence of any commercial or political interests. But what are we seeing? DC Gazette "journalism has always been a craft in a rare moments-an-art-but never a profession". He goes further to explain "It depends too much on the perception, skill, empathy and honesty of the practitioner rather the acquisition of technical knowledge and skills"…-Too many reporters have nothing but techniques.

To conclude, journalism has actually been thought to be a profession because it plays a crucial role in keeping people informed about what’s happening in the world. Journalists help uncover the truth, hold people accountable, and gives a voice to those who may not have one. It seems like it’s all about providing accurate and reliable information to the public. What if I argue over it that, it is the fact that it is a job that is why journalists find it normal to do all these things and not because it is a profession. Any other person can give accurate and accountable news so far as they have the platform.

To conclude, I would say that, though journalism is a good thing, it is in no way a profession but a skill learnt.
